boca burger
I just ate a boca burger for the first time. It was ready in two minutes flat.
I remember when I was grossed out by the idea that soy might be mixed in with the good stuff — meat — to make the meat go farther.
I also remember when I was disdainful of the idea of eating ‘pretend’ meat– if you’re going to eat pretend meat, why would you even bother taking a stand and being a vegetarian?
What a turnaround, eh?
The boca burger was good. It was just like a real burger. Except without the gristle and bone chips and smell of burning flesh. I can totally live with this. I can have my burger and eat it too. Now let’s check out those non-dairy cheese slices…

I gave the Boy Wonder boca burgers for quite a while until morning sickness with his sister turned me off of them. Used to be able to get him to eat them with fresh salsa and maybe even a little avocado smushed with lime juice. These days he may well be the only kid in the country who refused to eat anything even slightly burger-shaped no matter of what it might be made.

hahahahah! you ruined him.
Mmmmm salsa and lime…
I’m sure I’ll go off the bocas eventually. they have a very, um, meaty taste, smell and texture that, a lifelong vegetarian friend of ours notes, is eerily close to meat. But for now it’s pretty darn good, especially until I learn to keep my kitchen stocked with the post punk vegan kitchen stuff. Especially since everyone around me loves burgers so I may as well join in, especially since these are so easy.
